There's only so much you can do with spinning tops. Is a revival for a dormant series. You might remember the franchise's original appearance in America, back around 2001, 2002 and 2003 -- then, like the Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Bakugan properties, it found some mainstream success by pairing an anime series with a popular toy.
The reason Beyblade went dormant, though, is because it eventually just ran out of momentum. Since there's only so much you can do with spinning tops. That's the core idea here, as two opposing Beybladers face off against each other, stare each other down with intense emotion, and then pull small plastic ripcords to send the equivalent of two customized dreidels into battle.
The tops spin and bounce around, knocking into each other inside the confines of a bowl-shaped arena about one foot in diameter, and eventually one of them stops spinning first. But tops are serious business in the Beyblade world, so there's an entire adventure wrapped around this incredibly limited concept. The tournament is mysterious because, oddly, those Bladers who lose their matches find themselves somehow drained of energy and unable to get up off the ground. Gingka is enraged by the idea of someone tampering with the sanctity and safety of his favorite sort-of-a-sport, and he takes off on a mad quest to find the villain responsible and bring him to justice. That quest, though, never really comes to fruition.
There's no real rhyme or reason to Metal Fusion's 'story' at all, as it's just an endless parade of Beyblade battles against one cartoon kid after another. The game shows you a map screen and gives you the option to move to the next battle or tweak your Beyblade's settings. No exploration, no real narrative.

Just battling. Which would be fine if the battling were fun, but it isn't really.
Each round begins with a quick touch-screen event where you place your stylus on your Beyblade's ripcord, then try to yank it as fast as possible and as far as possible with the best timing possible. If you succeed, you get a small boost going into the beginning of your match. The match itself, then, plays out as you watch your top gyrate around the bowl arena and slam into your opponent's top. It's more interactive than playing with two tops would be in the real world, as you can influence the action somewhat by drawing lines to change your top's direction, tapping on the screen to make it jump, and triggering special abilities that temporarily enhance your attack, defense, or stamina ratings with flashy effects.

You can even build up a Spirit Meter and ultimately unleash an over-the-top summoning cutscene, the style of which seems ripped straight out of the Final Fantasy series -- a meteor strike will rain down upon your opponent, or some mythical beast will appear. But really, it's just a little too ridiculous for me to wrap my mind around. I get the over-the-top angle. I understand it's a way to make limited concepts feel like they're carrying more weight. I just don't think it works for Beyblade -- I can't remove myself from remembering that, underneath all this nonsense, these are battles between a couple of two-inch toys.
